Louis Silvestre created this painting using oil paint on canvas. The painting itself is framed in a thick gold frame with what appear to be flowers around the edges. The frame seems to separate the painting from the rest of the room and helps it stand out. It almost seems like the outer edge of the painting is also used as a frame to make the center of the painting very vibrant and important. The setting of the scene seems to calm and relieve the subjects. Perseus killed the sea monster, depicted at the bottom right of the painting, with blood pouring from its mouth. Perseus is unlocking the chains holding Andromeda to the cliff face. Next to Perseus and Andromeda there are two cherubs, one of which holds a scepter. The sword and shield used by Perseus lie on the ground, blood dripping from the blade. Most of Andromeda's clothes are torn, with only her right sleeve hanging from her arm, demonstrating the terror she endured after being captured by the sea monster. The citizens of the city are seen in the background and seem very grateful that the sea monster has been defeated and that Andromeda is no longer in danger. In the background you can see the seaside town. The sky is cloudy, but it seems like it's going from a dark day to a clear sky with Andromeda's rescue. Perseus is depicted with h...... in the center of the card...... further implies the strength Perseus received from his parents Zeus and Danae. The scene is very intense and shows the consequences of a battle easily won by the heroic Perseus. Bibliography "Europe in the 18th century". Europe in the 18th century. Network. 01 May 2014. .
