Whereas an individual can benefit greatly from social networking websites; on the contrary, this benefit will likely be offset by the negative impacts that these sites impose on society as a whole. Currently, 1 in 3 people (2.3 billion) in the world access the Internet for communication purposes or to consume information. This tendency to communicate in the digital age involves substantial changes on individuals as well as on their social behaviors. As beneficial as it may be for an individual to have the ability to be online 24/7 for multiple purposes, during the same time frame, countless people across America are exposed to online bullying (cyberbullying), criminal activity on virtual platforms (cyber crime) and addiction linked to social media activities. These people are vulnerable simply because they are active users of social networks; therefore, society as a whole faces the disastrous and sudden outcome of suicide due to cyberbullying (bullying). To say the least. Nor is the situation improving when it comes to cybercrime or user addiction. To make matters worse, people exposed to certain conditions (mental health problems, such as depression and bipolar disorder) have the propensity to undermine the benefits they might otherwise gain from using social media.
