Against Horse RacingGrace Jackson Have you ever been to a horse race? Seeing riders giving their horses a pat and an apple after the race, people cheering on their horse as he speeds towards the finish line? Sounds like a great time. But what happens to those horses after they finish the race? What happens to people who have gambled away their family life savings. All horse racing should be stopped due to the welfare of the horses, the effects of gambling and lack of interest. Just like the well-being of humans, horses are entitled to the same care and respect. We can't just use them as entertainment. But as you will see, unfortunately, this is not the case. Every year in England and Ireland around 12,000 foals produce bread for horse racing. And normally only 50% is acceptable for racing. The rest of the horses are sent to slaughter, shot or lead lives of abuse. *(see below) Many cases show horse meat being sold as "beef" or "pork". Many fast food restaurants buy horse meat because it is much cheaper and consumers can hardly distinguish between the two. It is illegal to sell horse meat as any other type of meat. So it's not only terrible, but illegal. Have you ever eaten horse meat? You may have it in your “beef” or “pork” (because they sell horse meat like the ones in Canada) but let's hope not, because it is poisonous to humans. The meat we eat every day could be horse meat and poison our body. Additionally, years of inbreeding cause the horse's legs to be small and fragile. Their ankles are the same size as humans and their entire body weighs more than 1,000 pounds. If they can barely support their own weight, how are they supposed to be able to support the weight of their riders? Furthermore, ... middle of paper ... or for years companies have been telling the public that their hair and skin are thick enough that it won't hurt them, and the public has believed them. But now the public knows the truth and knows not to support this type of abuse. If no one likes horse racing anymore, what's the point? Day after day, horses are abused, people begin a long downward spiral into horse racing addiction, and fewer and fewer people watch horse racing. But we can stop everything with one simple step. Closing of all horse racing. You can get involved by telling more and more people, or with “Horse Racing Week” and let's stop all the horses that are born and have nowhere to go but the slaughterhouse. All the families of the people who are continually worried. Let's help. We cannot let another horse die while a race is being run for the greedy and selfish horse racing industry.
