Topic > An Author's Purpose in Writing - 744

Some authors have one or more specific purposes in their writing. These purposes are usually about what that specific author believes and is usually demonstrated somewhere in their life. This specific belief is something they develop over time just like anyone else. Sometimes it's not something specific about their beliefs, but rather something they've learned and would like to communicate to people in a creative way, for example by writing short stories. Sometimes an author has a purpose for writing a specific story or poem and fails to fully and clearly express their point of view in the writing. However, when the author is specific about what he would like to convey, this is usually his main goal. In A Devoted Son by Anita Desai, Anita Desai works to achieve some of her beliefs such as expressing the duality of human nature and that nothing is as simple as it seems. In A Devoted Son Anita Desai follows her original plan for the story for the following reasons. To begin, Anita Desai says that he would like to capture the duality of human life that is presented in his short story A Devoted Son. Anita Desai does a great job of showing how there is a double in every person's life. It can also be argued that duality exists in every aspect of a person's life. In a personality there can be different aspects of how a person acts, for example towards certain people, an environment, expectations and so on. In this story the duality of the life of the young man named Rakesh is demonstrated in a certain environment and time of his life. At the beginning of the story the young man is very respectful towards his father named Varma, he does everything that his father asks him to do in life and will not disrespect him even if he was...... middle of paper... ...olated like a cell, and take the evening air out in the garden” page 1425. Rakesh now has his turn to look after his father and his father is also described as an old man who can barely walk now compared to what had been a proud young man of Rakesh. In the end, Anita Desai did a great job of expressing what she wanted to express in her writing. Through his idea of duality in life and human nature described in the midst of Rakesh's story and his new trust and loss of respect for his father and rather a duty towards him. At the way Varma resists his son's attempt to care for him and the complexity of what the way his son treats him really means to him. Then finally moving forward to how roles in life change for father and son as life goes on and how this also has to do with duality in life. Works Cited A Devoted Son by Anita Desai
