Topic > Balance and Mobility Theory: The Health Belief Model

The most challenging activity in the Balance and Mobility program was having the elderly balance on a piece of Styrofoam. They were asked to place both feet on top of the dough and shift their weight back and forth on each foot. To assess their vision and sensory abilities, they were also asked to close their eyes while doing this “noodle activity.” Some older adults did not participate in this activity because they perceived the activity as dangerous as they might lose their balance on the polystyrene dough and thus fall. In contrast, others did not participate because they perceived the activity as difficult and distressing. Participants explained that moving their weight back and forth puts a strain on their legs and makes it painful for them to take part in the activity. Therefore, these perceived barriers cause participants to display a negative attitude towards the “noodle”.
