The authors of “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe and “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson show death as an inevitable part of life, which can occur at the hands of those who take treatment. The old man in Poe's story and Mrs. Hutchinson in Jackson's story never expect that death has come to them. At midnight the old man wakes up due to a noise and begins to find rational reasons for the occurrence of the noise. Poe's protagonist stands outside the old man's door, silently, listening to the old man say, "Is it but wind in the chimney or is it merely a cricket that has chirped" (Poe 1); unaware that the protagonist is behind his door waiting for the optimal moment to attack and suffocate the old man using his bed. Likewise, Bill Hutchinson's family was suddenly chosen as lottery winners, and his wife, Mrs. Hutchinson, was chosen as a sacrifice for the sake of good crops and harvest; this is a tradition and belief of the village to which the Hutchinsons belong and has been carried out every year for many generations. The Hutchinsons are singled out in an instant, which does not allow Mrs. Hutchinson to realize what she is saying: “Get up Bill Hutchinson” (Jackson 299); unable to understand that a member of his family will lose his life for the sake of good harvests and harvests. Both of these innocent characters don't know that death is just moments away. They also lose their lives at the hands of those who care for them. Poe's protagonist "loved the old man" but decides to take his life because the old man has an eye that resembles that of a vulture, which he feels is a threat. The protagonist's words contradict his actions as he "decided to take the old man's life, and so... middle of paper... the Navy seaplanes, looked at each other and smiled."
