Topic > Book Review: Smokescreen - 1491

Smokescreen is an adrenaline-filled adventure from Nancy Hartry where nothing is as it seems. It consists of four parts comprising twenty-seven chapters and is two hundred and two pages long. There are 3 "books" in which the transition is based on the setting (the first is The Bunkhouse, the second is The novel is told by the main character, a seventeen-year-old girl named Kerry, in the first person. The target audience are teenagers and young adults. The main protagonists of the novel are Kerry (in which the story revolves around her) and Yvette (Kerry's colleague in her summer job in which they become friends). one), is an arrogant man and treats Kerry and Yvette like dirt and couldn't care less about their needs and safety as he sends them out without any radio or communication system and says, “I look worried, your wagon? wait, girls” (Page 25). There are countless firefighters but the ones that Kerry and Yvette hang out with the most are Didier and Aubrey in which Kerry falls in love with Didier who is an understanding young man and treats both girls with a lot of respect and helps them when they need help. Aubrey is quieter and different than the rest of the firefighters, which Kerry finds attractive. He helps Kerry, and when Kerry is confused, he explains to her to put her trust in him: "Let your mind and heart work like friends, who love and trust each other" (Page 153). Later in the novel, there are new characters including Matt (a pilot on whom Yvette has a crush), Rolf (an older man who is the kitchen's chef), Slash (a man Rolf hires to help Kerry and Yvette in the kitchen) and Sirois (the fire boss at base two). Matt is a guy...... middle of paper...... usually good on his own but I get nervous in front of people and tend to mess up and not just in sport, but in general. Overall I would recommend this novel. I found it funny and the kidnapping part really surprised me because Didier never looked like he would be the one starting the fires. I personally thought it was Aubrey since he randomly disappeared. Throughout the book there are many action-packed, fun and entertaining bits. I chose this novel because it was about two hundred pages long and met the assignment criteria, and I found the title and cover interesting to read. Smokescreen is a good mix of action, mystery and adventure all in one book, so if you're looking for a new novel to read, I highly recommend reading Smokescreen because it's not overly long, boring and repetitive like other novels I've read in the past they were longer.
