Parent Education Lesson Plan with a Newly Diagnosed ChildAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "about 1 in 68 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ) and ASD is nearly 5 times more common among boys (1 in 42) than among girls (1 in 189)” (CDC, 2010). a mental illness defined as deficits in communication and social interaction and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities. The signs and symptoms of autism are usually visible in the early period of development (before the age of three). the lack of social skills and typical behavioral patterns may not be recognized until the child is able to meet the social, educational, or other significant demands of the life stage. The incidence of autism worldwide is increased significantly since the late 1960s and early 1970s. Some studies propose that the recent increase in frequency is likely due to extrinsic factors such as increased awareness and recognition of this same mental illness. To address these issues, the purpose of this lesson plan is to teach the signs, symptoms, and behaviors common in children with Autism to young adults (ages twenty to forty) with a newly diagnosed child, using theory of cognitive learning and the health promotion model. Identified Population A parent's goal is to care for their child as best as possible and promote their optimal growth. All children have difficulty understanding complex schoolwork during their early educational years and parents may become stressed, but according to Judy Farmer (2013), stress levels for parents of children with autism are significantly higher than reported by the children's parents. .... middle of paper ......n Materials on the pre-test and post-test on autism2.
