This essay will describe the characteristics of the modern nation-state, explain how the United States fits the criteria and functions as a modern nation-state, discuss the European Union as a transnational entity, analyze how national states and transnational entities engage in foreign policy to achieve their interests and the consequences of this interaction for international politics. Some of the characteristics that make up a modern nation state are; the territory's population is united in national identity and traditions, has one or more official languages and common ancestry, has an organized government, will have independence and sovereignty (self-governing), and has a defined territory and/or boundaries. An example of a modern nation-state is Egypt. Egypt's identity is closely linked to its location and long history. Egyptians are an Arabic-speaking nation-state with a culture and heritage as diverse as a modern nation-state. Their development, over the centuries, has seen conflicting beliefs, but most Egyptians today see themselves, their history, culture and language as specifically Egyptian. Mr. Kamel states that “Egypt's leading role in the Middle East in cultural and political affairs generally dominates Egypt's relations with other nations. In turn, this broadens or limits the scope of choices and opportunities available at the national level” (Kamel, 1999). Egypt as a state; their politics is organized according to a multi-party semi-presidential system, in which executive power is divided between the President and the Prime Minister. Egypt also holds regular multi-party parliamentary elections; which is separate from the Egyptian Parliament, the People's Assembly and the Consultative Council, as described by...... middle of the document ......mission of specialized commissions to regulate and control the industry. The United States and the European Union have similar vested interests in stability, prevention, and trade in terrorism. Some of the consequences of EU-US interaction for international politics are, in most cases, that entering into conflict can ultimately retard the effectiveness of nation states' ability to influence as a world leader.
