In Shakespeare's time, marriage was seen as a social and wealthy commitment and did not involve love. In the Elizabethan era, women were believed to be inferior to men and were expected to obey men without exception. Marriage was seen as a business relationship where money was involved, this explained the relationship between men and women and their interests in marriage. Marriages between wealthy families were very common at that time and were expected to increase the family fortune. For marriage, women were expected to have their own "dowry", which at that time was money and property inherited after marriage. However, in their marriage women lose all their assets and become the property of their husband. A good example of a marriage made with social commitment is the marriage between Petruchio and Katherina. The only reason Petruchio wants to be with her is because of her money. Consequently this shows how men do not show any romanticism towards women. The Taming of the Shrew is a play set in Padua, Italy. It begins with four men who wish to marry Bianca, Baptista's youngest daughter. However, Baptista tells them that no one will marry Bianca unless he finds a husband for Katherina, his eldest daughter. Nobody wanted to marry Katherina due to her harsh personality, but Hortensio and Gremio decide to look for a husband for Katherina. To their surprise, Petruchio from Verona arrives in Padua in search of a wife to improve his financial situation. We knew what he was looking for from what he said, “To move and prosper as best I can,” when he tells Hortensio why he came to Padua. It means that he came to find a wife and get rich and "if well, then happily in Padua". He's basically saying he came to Pa... middle of paper... he didn't mean to portray marriage as a horrible place to live, but that's how marriage was viewed in his day. He is making us understand what life was like in his time. In conclusion, Shakespeare uses several ways to show how marriage is connected to the type of male and female characters portrayed in the play. We can see from the use of clothes to disguise oneself to pretend to be someone else, to the way domestication is portrayed to control other characters, how women were regarded at that time. They were the first court for their lovely ways and in marriage they were treated as a lower sex than them. Women were forced to deal with their husbands in silence, without saying anything to anyone. We can perceive that this play is only about the social position of being able to marry who you want to be with. And most importantly, money is the main reason why people married during that time.
