Dreams are what we experience while we sleep or even when we are awake, they can last from a few seconds up to twenty minutes. Dreams can be made up of images, emotions, ideas and desires. According to the 10th edition Psychology textbook, “we spend six years of our lives in dreams.” (p. 105) We spend so much time dreaming but yet we don't know the purpose and reasoning behind our dreams. However, by studying psychology with John Petellat at Daytona State College, I came to learn proposed explanations of why we dream. Some of the many explanations are “Satisfying our desires”, “Archiving memories” and “Making sense of neutral statics”. (page 106-107)One of the theories about why we dream is that we dream to satisfy our desires. From the book The Interpretation of Dreams, Sigmund Freud proposes that "He regarded the manifest content of a dream as a censored and symbolic version of its latent content, of the unconscious drives and desires that would be threatening if expressed directly."
