Topic > Understanding Authority - 864

To understand this article we will first have to take a look at the word authority. Authority means “the power to determine, adjudicate, or otherwise resolve matters or disputes; jurisdiction; the right to control, command or determine”. (“authority.”) This authority can come from a teacher, pastor, principle, or anyone else with the ability to control or command someone or something. The biblical definition states that authority is “the legal and/or moral right to exercise power, or rightly possessed power. In the Bible God is presented as the ultimate and personal authority and the source of all authority” (“Douglas, J.D., and Merrill C. Tenney.” p.61). In many stories such as Metamorphoses, Ivan Ilyich and The Guest there was a clear definition that although there was authority; the understanding of that authority was not concrete in any way. Kafka's understanding was that the world was not in control and he wished to share this with many through his writings. Kafka's expression in his life was that those who held "incomprehensible authority" were filled with guilt while being unable to have a successful relationship with anyone ("Mack, Maynard." p. 2298) . Although Kafka did not appreciate the difficulty of his father's authority, he understood that authority also exists for one's own benefit. We see that through Kafka's story the Metamorphosis is the struggle with the realism of life and false life in which authority played an important role. He was able to express the lack of love he felt towards the lack of educational concepts Gregor was dealing with. Colossians 2:18-19 counters the concepts that Kafka lived by stating that what he described as similar to a false… middle of paper… lives not just in part, but in the whole of our lives. Luke 6:46 tells us that we will only know what Christ is like if we place our whole lives in His authority. Works Cited "authorities". Dictionary.com Unabridged.
