Topic > Understanding the elements of eco-friendly toilets such as…

Although the pioneer company of the Eco-San toilet system was founded in 1987, the idea of an Eco-San toilet system in the Philippines dates back to 2001 , when the Philippine Center for Advanced Studies (CAPS) entered into a partnership with WASTE, a Dutch non-governmental organization, to conduct studies on solid waste management, especially recycling, composting, hospital waste and on the institutional aspects of solid waste management. WASTE suggested to CAPS a new emerging product: a new way of managing excrement, and this was the Eco-Sanitation Toilet System. Their pilot project took place in Batangas City, where they installed Eco-San toilets in four poor families. Although only one in four toilets functioned properly due to faulty and neglected structural designs, they were able to rebuild and improve the system later. Today, there are over 400 Eco-San toilets installed across the country with the help of funding from local government units (LGUs) and with the involvement of different sectors such as the Department of Health, the Department of the Interior and local governments – Gesellschaft Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), The World Bank – Water and Sanitation Program (WB-WSP), The States Agency International Development Philippine Sanitation Alliance (USAID PSA), Basic Needs Services Philippines, Inc. (BNS -BORDA) and Asian Development Bank (ADB). CAPS' vision is to become "the leading knowledge center and catalyst for sustainable sanitation and solid waste management" and they have the mission to "influence the policy and decision-making of national and local leaders in the field of management urban environment through cutting-edge research and innovative projects that...... middle of paper.... ..the oil system seems to be more convenient and practical, but the Eco-San Toilet system could bring more progress and benefits to our health and the environment.
