During that time many political controversies such as World War II and Nazism influenced many authors to write about the current issue. And John Boyne's “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” was influenced primarily by the political controversies of the time. In one section of the book, Hitler visits Bruno's house during a dinner. “Father: I am a soldier. Soldiers fight a war. Mother: This is not war! Father: It's a vital part!” The dialogue between Bruno's parents mentions that Bruno's father is a soldier and that he is ready to fight for Hitler. In response to the dialogue, Bruno says the following “Heil Hitler,” which, he assumed, was another way of saying, “Well, goodbye for now, I wish you a pleasant afternoon” (Boyne, 54). According to Merriam Webster's dictionary, “The Nazi salute or Hitler salute was a greeting gesture in Nazi Germany.” The meaning of Bruno's words was sarcastic and somewhat ironic. Political controversies affected the story because characters like Bruno's father and Hitler himself were defined as soldiers and leaders we can recognize
