Over the years there have been several studies examining what is called the "Nature vs. Nurture" question. These studies looked at different characteristics of the person from intelligence, personality, interests, social issues and biology. Although most agree that the answer to this question is not one relative to the other, but rather it is a combination of the two that makes us who we are. Several studies have shown this, but there are some aspects of our person on which one has a greater influence than the other. Hopwood et al., (2011) suggest that our personality as we grow and mature is more influenced by our environment than our genes. This article examines the effects of research by Hopwood et al. compared to the research of Bouchard, Lykken, McGue, Segal and Tellegen on this topic. The research by Hopwood et al. (2011) examined our personality and how it develops from late adolescence (age 17) to young adulthood (age 29). The research participants were same-sex MZ twins or DZ twins who responded to the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ). This allowed the researcher to study four main personality traits: negative emotionality or neuroticism (NEM), positive emotionality or agentic extraversion (PEM-A), positive emotionality or communal agreeableness (PEM-C), and constraint (CON) (as situated in Hopwood, 2011, p.
