Homelessness has become a universal problem among all human beings, both in San Francisco and in America as a whole. Each year in the United States, approximately 3.5 million people experience homelessness. People look at homeless people with disgust and tell themselves they will never be put in that position. Something that most people don't realize is that they too are on the verge of becoming homeless. Homelessness is generally caused by living, low-wage jobs, and high unemployment rates. Without an established definition of homelessness, people view homelessness negatively, especially when they ask for help. As the media publicizes alcoholics, gang members and drug addicts, people are scared away from wanting to help. Because there is such a negative image of homelessness, people are less likely to donate to help. These groups go unnoticed, which can sometimes lead to increased criminal activity, such as women joining pimps to be sold into prostitution.
