Topic > The unique talent of literature: the bluest eye, the night,...

Literature functions as a unique place to communicate social injustices to society, allowing readers to experience the treatment of prejudices through words and the feelings of the characters. This makes readers connect and think more deeply about the injustices that are happening in the world today. In The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison, Night, written by Elie Wiesel, and Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes, each author uses literary devices such as tone, symbolism, and character to inform society of its injustices. However, each writer approaches the topic of social injustices differently with unique descriptions and styles. On the other hand, the authors also use imagery and themes in similar ways to emphasize the suffering experienced by each character. Therefore, literature is an excellent example in revealing the injustices created by society. The bluest eye describes the tone of passion. As readers progress through the novel, the passion of black women is expressed deeply to readers to show how their desires were meant to fit into society. In the Spring season, chapter nine, page 138, Morrison writes: “Take this food and give it to the creature that sleeps on the porch. Make sure he eats it. And observe carefully how he behaves. If nothing happens, you will know that God has rejected you, if the animal behaves strangely, your wish will be granted the day after this." In this quote, Soaphead is telling Pecola what to do in order for her wish to come fulfilled eyes blue eyes that white girls had. The blue eyes at the...... center of the card ...... accepted norms. Toni Morrison, Elie Wiesel and Daniel Keyes each use tone, symbolism and character to enrich the books on inform readers about social injustices in society. In addition to that, the three authors also use effective images and themes to illustrate to readers how social injustice affected the characters. For Pecola it was the color and ugliness of her skin constantly torment her. The injustice Eliezer suffered was the Holocaust. Ultimately, it was Charlie's mental disability that caused his loneliness. By using these literary techniques in literature, the devices truly educate the audience to realize that these injustices that occur are a result of society not being highly informed about the topic at hand and its effects. When society is blinded by social injustices, they are seen as no different from the abusers themselves.
