Topic > No Rules on Speech - 689

In today's society, free speech has become one of the most exponentially debated topics in our nation. If you were to ask ten different people their views on this, you would almost certainly get ten different answers. Why has an area that was once set in stone become so objectionable? The Free Speech Amendment was passed in 1791; this was conveyed with the idea that no matter what your opinions are, whether religious, political or ethnic, we can share them without fear of imprisonment or retaliation. The First Amendment allows us to express ourselves freely. Therefore, there should be no limits on free speech for any person, respectful dialogue should not be required, and the responsibility each individual has for their own speech is something they must be held accountable for at all costs. Free speech is one of the principles on which the United States of America was built. This right is given to each of us who sets foot on this earth. There should be no limits on free speech because everyone has their own opinions, thoughts and beliefs that don't always match those of the next person. This may involve people being fired for expressing their thoughts on certain topics. This was recently brought up when LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling made a comment privately to his lover telling her to stop posting photos of her with black men and to stop bringing them to his games. This exclusive conversation was recorded and then broadcast nationwide. He was fined $2.5 million for "hateful opinions", banned from attending any NBA games for life and forced to sell the team. As a result, I agree that people... middle of paper... have asked for forgiveness. The airlines said they did not accept his apology or explanation. This shows how we are given freedom of speech, but at the same time we must be held accountable for the things we say. There is a substantial distinction between free speech of your thoughts and opinions versus a threat. Since our Congress decided to pass the Free Speech Amendment, I believe it was passed for all the right reasons. The amendment should not be changed now because some individuals feel differently about it. Having the right to say whatever you want, whenever you want, is a right given to every American. Free speech with accountability is the only path America should ever go. As a fellow American, I couldn't be more grateful to have the ability to express my feelings whenever I feel necessary.
