Teenagers are not alone from their families or households. Problems of poverty and damaged families impact their development and achievement of academic success. In many high-poverty areas, young people grow up in troubled families, may have unreliable living situations, or have parents who are also uneducated. These situations present major obstacles to the successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. These youth need additional services and supports to succeed. In low-income communities, the number of teenagers facing these problems is greater than in most other privileged areas. Large investments are needed to influence outcomes for young people in these low-income groups
