What remained of me was a good book. The idea was truly original and unique. It was great because Eva wasn't dominant but was told through her point of view and in a perfect way too. It was very easy to get the story stuck in the reader's head, even when told by a character who barely spoke words throughout the story. It was entertaining and well told. Aside from the story style, the book leaves out information and doesn't directly address things that should have already been made clear at the beginning of the book. For example, why hybrids pose a threat to society has not been addressed. The article stated that hybrids were dangerous and that it should be reported if any hybrids were suspected or found. Continuing the story with the hope that this question will be revealed, the last page has been turned with the question still unanswered. It would only make sense to assume that it was discrimination for being different. If the story had clarified why this angst and fear of the hybrid exists in people, then the plot would inevitably go deeper with the “why,” which would add more opportunities for plot twists. The hybrids continued to fight and live in fear from the beginning to the end of the book. However, reading all the action and seeing the characters struggle to escape - and not knowing a solid reason why people considered hybrids a threat, was disturbing and left questions. Another disturbing factor about this book was all the repetition in the book. Although the story was told with a beautiful approach, Zhang repeated many things over and over in his writing. This was something that could be overlooked at first, but when Zhang continually repeated it, it became difficult to enjoy and continue reading. Another point... half the paper... the characters weren't very layered. The character designs weren't amazing, but they weren't terrible either. A lot of the characters were really flat and most of the time they weren't the type that could drastically change the plot. None of the characters were the "line-jumping" type. The story revolves around two really boring girls. Honestly, there's no need for Eva to exist, she doesn't do anything, so there was no need for her to take the medicine and go to Hally's house. The story is full of unimportant things that take up the pages and is very blunt. Ultimately, this book was intriguing and had a very interesting way of approaching things and introducing new events. There are things that brought the book down, but not enough that I shouldn't read it. But, all flaws aside, it was worth a spin and the complexity was just enough to keep you going until the end..
