Production management functions depend on the size of the enterprise. In small businesses the production manager may be responsible for following up on production planning and control along with personnel, marketing, finance and purchasing functions. In medium-sized companies there may be separate managers for personnel, marketing and finance functions. But production planning and control, purchasing and stores could be under the control of the production management department. In large companies, production management is limited to the management of production activities only. As such, there are no durable and quick rules or strategies to identify the function of production management, but in academic focus we can state some of the functions, which are taken care of by production management. Predominantly, production management first selects the right product for production. Then select the accurate design for the product.
