Topic > The Importance of Polymers Today - 644

A polymer is a large molecule made up of many smaller subunits known as monomers. There are different types of polymers and many uses for all. Although people may not realize it, polymers play an essential role in our daily lives. Because polymers range from plastic, PVC and polystyrene, to key structures in the human body such as DNA and proteins, which are key components of the human body and which make it possible for each of us to live and be unique. So without polymers in our bodies we would be dead, and without them our society would change drastically for the worse to say the least. Polymers are also commonly called plastic, so now you can put into perspective how much we use polymers. You can also realize how damaged and different our world would be without polymers. Polymers like plastic have changed the way we do things in our society for the better. With the use of polymers, scientists were able to create an effective and cost-effective replacement for metals and ivory, which we used to make common objects such as doorknobs, billiard balls and game pieces. They were all made of ivory and since ivory is very rare and difficult to obtain, the price of all items made from this material increases. Without plastic, plates, cups and cutlery would continue to be made of metal or other expensive materials. But eventually people started replacing these things with plastic. Which is easier to make and cheaper to buy. Overall plastic has countless uses and is currently used to make many items without it, many items could not be mass produced and would not be accessible to most people. To produce an artificial polymer there are very few natural resources needed to... middle of paper... and they won't be advanced anytime soon, if ever. Because even though it's a very useful thing, it's also a very simple technology used mostly for simple things. In conclusion, I believe there would not be many people out there who would argue that polymers are not essential after knowing and understanding the contributions they have created in this world. Because for many years now they have been a good, durable material that has a myriad of good uses and without them our world would be incredibly different. They are cheap to produce and easy to recycle, which benefits not only us but also our environment. While the future of polymer and plastic technology doesn't look set to progress, it's still great for making durable items. That said, polymers are and will always be a major contributor to this world.
