What a pleasure it was to have an extraordinary, multimedia artist come to our Art 102 class. Bruce Conkle works with two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and four-dimensional time-based art. His time-based art has had the greatest impact on me and my understanding of art has changed. Many of his works have a political aspect, but are not hypocritical. His work presupposes a message that the viewer must interpret. Conkle's art has a mystery and dark humor. A person can have an idea of art such as ancient paintings and marble sculptures. Through this course, and especially Conkle's visit, I realized that many other art forms exist. When you see Conkle's work in an exhibition, he creates a space that includes everything in it as a single work of art. I wanted to experience it firsthand, so I ventured to the corner of SW 6th Street and W Burnside in downtown Portland. He created three statues in bronze and cast concrete.
