Topic > Dugway Accident of 1969 - 903

My research paper is about the Dugway Proving Ground accident of 1969. The accident actually took place in March of 1968. What happened in 1969 was that President Nixon reaffirmed the “no first use, retaliation in kind” policy that became a national policy for the use of chemical weapons. (Mauroni, Al, p. 33) The incident resulted in the killing of 6,000 sheep according to The Salt Lake Tribune. A deadly nerve agent known as VX had strayed from the reserve contaminating the sheep feeding area. The Army conducted investigations to prove that they had nothing to do with the death of those sheep. At the end of the investigation it emerged that they were not responsible for the accident. I will talk about the history of the Dugway Proving Ground and what causes the death of the sheep. The people blame the government for the death of the sheep, and the government blames the farmers. The government said the sheep died due to the pesticides sprayed to protect their crops. The history around the Dugway Proving Ground is interesting, because it was built in the spring of 1942 and testing began in the summer of 1942. They wanted to build this place as quickly as possible, because it was during World War II. The mission of the Dugway Proving Ground is to test and deploy U.S. and allied biological and chemical weapons defense systems in a secure, isolated environment. (DPG, March 2014) The Dugway Proving Ground was established by the U.S. Army Chemical Warfare Service, because they wanted a more secluded test site than they had at the U.S. Army's Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. The Dugway Proving Ground consisted of 802,000 acres. (DPG, March 2014) All this meant was that they wanted to find a place that wasn't so visible to people, and they stayed... middle of paper... a. They later closed the program, but it was eventually revived.Works Cited1. Mauroni, A. J. (2007). Chemical and Biological Warfare: A Reference Manual ABC-CLIO, Inc2. Guillemin, J. (2005).
