Many ethical and logical factors must be incorporated into a task for a company to advance. A necessary factor from the initial stages of development throughout the many years of a company's operation is motivation. Whether the business is a mom-and-pop shop or a large corporation, each requires motivated employees who are committed to improving the company's goods or services. There can be different ways in which we can motivate ourselves and motivate others. There have been several theories that identify various forms of motivation, one of which is called Goal Setting Theory. By examining this form of motivation used in the workplace, I will comment on the positive and negative aspects of the theory and bring personal experience to further explain the particular style of motivation. According to Robbins and Judge, goal setting theory is defined as “setting specific, difficult goals, with feedback, leads to higher performance” (214). They further state that the theory “assumes that an individual is committed to achieving the goal” (215) and are very determined to achieve it. Simply put, goal setting theory supports the idea of going beyond an individual's typical best by pushing themselves to a whole new level in what they do. Goal setting will lead to better performance by increasing effort, but also by improving the quality of feedback. Goal-setting theory is also “used to increase incentives for employees to complete work quickly and effectively” (MSG). To be used most effectively, these objectives should be challenging, realistic, clear, measurable and specific to the employees involved. As for the workplace, the goals must be complex without being overwhelming and must involve personal feedback and recognition (Small…half of the paper…for the position.
