Topic > What is Masculinity in The Matrix - 845

Masculinity is changing today as society demands not only a set of skills that a man should have, but rather certain characters that he should uphold. It is a motivating character development that comes from actions that define masculinity. Masculinity is not tied to certain skill sets, and the process of maintaining male identity in today's society is evolving around one's knowledge and character. In today's society, the concept of masculinity can be possessed by both men and women, depending on certain types of characters they acquire. In this essay I will talk about the masculinity that is embodied in the role of heroes in the two films Star Wars and The Matrix. Luke Skywalker in Star Wars demonstrates many qualities of masculinity. Even if he does not represent an ideal trait of hegemonic masculinity by displaying his physical strength and virile skills, Luca possesses some characteristics that correspond to the definition of a hero and masculinity. To truly understand his destiny and his relationship to the power of the Force, Luke must train himself to grasp and make sense of the guidance he receives from previous Jedi. He must overcome his pride and temper to complete his quest. Based on all the principles that power comes from within and that he must change his character by being focused, strong and energetic. Luke must overcome the thought of falling to the dark side and realize right from wrong. His character breaks the traditional concept of a hero, whereby most male heroic figures appear to be well built, physically strong, and fight well in battle. However, for Luke Skywalker, he must realize that his pride in becoming a great Jedi requires him to overcome his own conscience... middle of paper..., it is evident that masculinity is not the only characteristic that a figure possesses heroic. It is a set of characteristics that is judged primarily by the capacity of an emotionally and physically strong personality. It's easy to say that Trinity is just a male figure in a woman's body before Neo comes along. But what differentiates her from an admirable heroic figure is when she shows her selfless side by being the caretaker when Neo is weak and being selfless. A similar role of masculinity trait played by two heroes in the movies, Star Wars and The Matrix, is doing the right thing. It is by having the right judgment and the right skills to support those qualities by embodying certain traits of masculinity. Since the traits of masculinity could be in both male and female gender, it depends on his characters which differentiate them from ordinary people like heroes..
