Gas prices are going up these days and there's not much we can do about it. We are heavily reliant on vehicles as our primary mode of transportation and there isn't much we can do to change that. But what we can change is the type of fuel we can use for the engines. Today the main use of fuel for an engine is petrol, but with the demand for greater fuel economy increasing and the demand for emissions decreasing the industry is struggling and trying to find new fuel or even a source that can replace petrol. The industry has invested in all types of energy research: ethanol, methanol, compressed natural gas, propane and combinations thereof. Now comes the next fuel: fuel cells. Fuel cells have been around since the early 1800s. It was first conceived by two scientists named William Nicholson and Anthony Carlisle. Then improved by a man named William Grove, he called it the Grove Cell. The original cell had platinum electrodes dipped in nitric acid and zinc electrodes dipped in zinc sulfate. This cell created 1.8 volts total along with 12 amps. Then in 1900 the idea of using fuel cells in vehicles emerged. But it wasn't until the government started tightening emissions regulations that the idea started to turn into reality. In the 2000s, the automotive industry began carrying out research and development on vehicle fuel cells. Today, companies like Honda are making a fuel cell vehicle available to the public to rent for now. But with very few fueling stations and creating them being expensive is one of the disadvantages of having a fuel cell vehicle. Fuel cells only need three things to generate electricity, there is an anode, a cathode and an electrolyte. Each of these three elements differs depending on… half of the paper… not many of these exist in the United States. The alternative to going to the station is to have one placed in your home. But since people are not educated about hydrogen, they would be very reluctant to get one for their homes. With the disadvantages you can't really judge the fuel cell based on them. Fuel cells are still in the research and development phase. Once the industry finds a way to mass-produce cars with the necessary equipment and power needed for average consumption, fuel cell vehicles will eventually cost almost as much as a Toyota Prius. As well as educating the public about how great the fuel cell could be for the United States and that having one wouldn't be as dangerous as the public likes to think. Hopefully, the industry will continue to look at fuel cells to continue down this path. Fuel cells are a fantastic and promising new way to power our vehicles.
