Atticus The Brave and BraveThere are many brave people in this world including firefighters, soldiers, police officers, and other citizens who display random acts of courage. One person in particular who is a very courageous person is Atticus in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Throughout the novel Atticus shows great courage even when he knows that things may not go the way he wants and he doesn't stop or give up, he tries even harder and this shows true courage. To begin with, it takes a courageous man to face the negative pressures of the society in which he lives. In the 1930s racism is a powerful force. Yet Atticus Finch is willing to risk his reputation, his safety and even that of his children to defend a black man accused of raping a white woman. His defense of this black man is doomed to fail at first due to the nature of Southern life in this time period, but Atticus doesn't let that stop him or even discourage him, I honestly think it gave him more courage to try to succeed in demonstrating the disease of racism and also how it destroys cities and the lives of children. "Courage isn't a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing that you've been shot before you start, but you start anyway and make it no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do" (p. 149). This quote really shows courage and how Atticus showed his courage because he knew he would lose the trial but he didn't let that stop him because there is always that small chance and if you don't try you will never know. the novel and when he begins to devote his time to defending Tom Robinson, he shows another, more subtle courage with his children. Teach them that there are... middle of paper......ure generations. But with the courage shown by Atticus, he managed to kill racism in Maycomb and change the mentality of the people who were killing the disease. Even future generations would not be affected by the disease and could live a less "bad" life. In conclusion, after reading this novel it is very good at teaching what true courage is and demonstrates this throughout the novel. Atticus was the bravest character in this book because of the many courageous actions he took even though they could have harmed his reputation, his safety, and even the safety of his children. With all these courageous acts he could even be one of the bravest in the world. It takes a really strong person mentally to not fall into the negative pressures of others and to stand up for what is right even if all the odds are against you. This is true courage.
