Topic > The Effects of the Vietnam War on America - 774

The Vietnam War had horrible effects on the entire country. Most people did not agree with the war and even went so far as to be violent towards the soldiers upon their return. Many protested and avoided the draft, some even burned their cards. The country really hated this war. Many soldiers returned with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Statically, about half of the soldiers returned with it (ptsd.ne.gov/what-is-ptsd.html). They suffered from extreme flashbacks to the things they had to do and the things they saw, this personally plagued my great uncle his entire life. It often made them distant and once they returned they had difficulty connecting with people at home. Agent Orange was a chemical herbicide widely used during the Vietnam War. Many veterinarians have suffered serious illnesses from Agent Orange. Some of the diseases that have been caused are things like diabetes, leukemia, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, and respiratory cancers (publichealth.va.gov/PUBLICHEALTH/exposures/agentorange/conditions/index.asp). These are just some of the diseases it is known to cause, the list is long and this chemical has therefore caused the premature death of many soldiers, even not on the battlefield. There was a lot of civil unrest during the war because of how many people were against the war. One of the many ways in which civilians showed their antipathy for the war was by protesting, one of the protests was that of May 2, 1964, when 1000 students gathered in front of the United Nations Building in New York to denounce the "imperialist" policies of the village. . They chanted things like “we won't go” and pointed out places where they refused to serve in the military (Dougan, 72). Another way they protested was to protest directly...in the middle of the paper....we should have minded our own business, my great uncle would still be alive if it wasn't for this war, as would so many others and It's a shame they had to die for such a pointless war. I'm happy it made America think twice before we get involved in squabbles with other countries now, but that's all I'm happy about, well that and the music because man, that music is killer music.Works Citedptsd.ne .gov/what-is-ptsd.html publichealth.va.gov/PUBLICHEALTH/exposures/agentorange/conditions/index.asp Classroom.synonym.com/ways-vietnam-war-impacted-changed-goverments-foreign- policy-9587 .htmlA Nation Divided Clark Dougan Countriesquest.com/north_america/usa/history/foreign_policy_vietnam_war_and_watergate/the_impact_of_vietnam.html statisticbrain.com/vietnam-war-statics/Scar that links American culture and the Vietnam War Allen Beattie
