It is clear that “Cyberspace Dunderheads” by Ruth Marcus and “What's the Problem with Children Today?” share common goals. Both articles agree that technological advances have restructured our present and future existence in various ways. According to the two authors, communication, social networking and knowledge acquisition have all been influenced by technological advances. Although their articles have similarities, all their views and opinions do not match. Goldwasser and Marcus chose different paths to express their opinions. Goldwasser suggests that advanced communication has affected our entire nation. Goldwasser says, "We're talking about 33 million Americans who are fluent in texting, email, blogging, instant messaging, and constantly editing their profiles on social networking sites." She suggests that advanced communication has dominated most of Americans' lives. Marcus expresses optimism towards technological advances in communication. Marcus says, “Email and social networks, along with the ease of access and remoteness of interaction, help create and renew personal connections.” You state that technological advances in communication have positive effects. I agree that our world is definitely changing as technology continues to evolve because technology has transformed my life. As a child, writing letters to friends, pagers, postcards, and paper diaries were part of my daily communication. As I have matured, cell phones, text messages, emails, blogs, and instant messaging have replaced my previous communication techniques. I admit that changes in technology are definitely improvements. New technological advancements continue to emerge on a daily basis. It is almost impossible ... middle of paper ... concern about the value of personal relationships, connections and empathy due to technology. One of his research reports states: "College students have a 40% lower level of empathy, as measured by standard personality tests, compared to their peers 20 and 30 years ago..., coinciding with the increase in online communications and social networks". This study insinuates that technology is the ultimate cause of college students' decline in empathy. In my opinion, a study conducted by a university is not sufficient to formulate this type of hypothesis. Works Cited Goldwasser, Amy. "What's wrong with kids today?" Salon.
