Topic > My Dad's Waltz, My Dad's Hat, Those Winter Sundays

A relationship is important for a father and a son. The important thing is to recognize each other. Father and son relationships are important in the poems "My Father's Waltz", "Those Winter Sundays" and "My Father's Hat". Theodore Roethke acknowledges his father's love and care in his poem "My Papa's Waltz". Robert Hayden acknowledges his father in his poem "Those Winter Sundays", acknowledging his father's hard work and sacrifice. Mark Irwin acknowledges his father in his poem "My Father's Hat". The three poems recognize the fathers; however, the poems are different in their mood. The atmosphere of Theodore Roethke's poem, “My Papa's Waltz,” is emotional. The poem is a childhood memory of Roethke's father making him wander around the kitchen. The poet describes how he feels, while his father turns him around. Roethke wrote “breath and death”, “dizzying and easy”. (“Dad” 1-4) The reader imagines the father turning the boy around and the boy holding onto his father. The poet wrote: "We went wild until the pots slipped off the kitchen shelf." (“Daddy” 5-6) and “My mother's face/She couldn't raise her eyebrows.” (“Dad” 7-8) The mother seems to dislike the whirlwind in the kitchen, but the poet uses the word “game,” which indicates that it was playful and fun. The rhyme gives the reader the choice to interpret the poem with a favorable or unfavorable meaning. I believe that the poet's childhood memories demonstrate the father's attention and love for his son. The atmosphere of the poem "Those Winter Sundays", written by Robert Hayden, is one of regret. The poet describes a cold winter Sunday morning, staying in bed until the house is warm. The poet expressed sympathy for his father who rose early on a cold Sunday morning... middle of paper... toil in weekday time." ("Winter" 3) Mark Irwin, however, did not describe his hands father, but he recognized his father by his love for his hat. Mark Irwin's imagery consisted of his use of the hat's senses of smell, imagining he was in a forest and listening to the wind in the trees. The memories d The childhoods of the three poets indicate their recognition of their fathers. This recognition indicates the importance of the relationship between a father and a son.
