In sociology there are many theories to better understand a society. Many things affect an individual's behavior, lifestyle, relationships, and much more. Technology is one of the many things that influence people. The Internet is used all over the world and we can use sociology to determine what importance and place it has in society. To better understand this invention and its implications in society, this article will cover the three well-known theories which are the theories of conflict, functionalism and symbolic internationalism. There are three theories that look at the Internet from different points of view, for example at a micro and macro level. Functionalism focuses on society as a whole, where conflict theory focuses on the group within that society and symbolic interaction focuses on the individuals in the group and society. Therefore, the point of view changes depending on the population and perspective. One of the important perspectives is structural functionalism. This approach focuses on “various components of society without prioritizing or evaluating their importance to the social system as a whole; in fact all the elements of a society have the same weight” (Naiman, 2004; pp.18). In terms of the Internet, a functionalist would see the Internet as a resource that brings efficiency to individuals' lives because it is convenient. It also allows people to interact with each other across the world. A functionalist would ask questions regarding the function of the Internet in society: How does the Internet help people access their resources more quickly? How does it help people gain knowledge and how can services be accessible to the demanding population? Therefore, it mainly considers the benefits for all rather than for a few individuals. Today the Internet is used more efficiently because it saves time. An individual can spend a few minutes online, booking a plane ticket instead of going to a travel agency in person or calling customer service and going through a long and hectic process. As technology advances, it plays an even greater role in shaping the lives of individuals. Additionally, some people may want to visit bureaucracies. However, others may not have time to visit offices due to family responsibilities or other reasons. The functionalist theorist would see a great advantage when it comes to administrative online services. It will eliminate waiting lists, make life easier for citizens and take up less space in bureaucracies.
