INTRODUCTION For this assignment I will be doing a timeline of the history of beauty therapy and the significant practices that have taken place. I will start with interesting facts dating back to ancient times and continue up to the present century. My timeline will consist of information on ancient beauty tools and equipment, product history, massage history, and makeup styles over time. I will discuss New Zealand's involvement in the field of beauty and provide a brief summary of the impact historical events have had on today's beauty techniques and practices. ANCIENT FACTS ABOUT BEAUTY • 4000 BC - Ancient Egyptians are widely known for their beauty and methods of enhancing their facial features. The Egyptians wore makeup for magical and spiritual reasons, they believed that cleanliness and a neat appearance would open a door to acceptance by the gods. Women and men used Galena Mesdemet (composed of copper and lead ore) to apply to the eyelid, creating a pointed almond shape. Malachite was applied to the face, giving the skin definition and color. • 3000 BC - During this time nail coloring and coloring were extremely common in Chinese culture. Men and women used beeswax, egg white and rose petals to prepare a shiny nail polish. Methods such as these would prove to be quite time-consuming, as this procedure required the nails to remain submerged in the mixture for several hours. In Chinese culture, only the rich could wear bright colors. Poorer citizens were only allowed to wear dull colors and defiance would have resulted in the death penalty. • 2500 BC – Essential oils were used by the ancient Egyptians to make perfumes. They spent hundreds of years trying to perfect a pleasant scent... middle of paper... standard qualifications, but they also provided high-quality, affordable products to therapists across the country.• 1986Joyce and Neil Blok sold their business to Self Care Group and retreated to north Queensland. • 1990 The house that Joyce turned into a school was demolished and replaced by a car park to accommodate swimming fans for the Commonwealth Games. Earlier this year, Joyce Blok School moved to a larger building. • 1993 – Present The Joyce Blok Institution helped form Elite International, a government-funded beauty and spa therapy school in Hamilton. Elite has expanded since 1993 and there are now four institutions in New Zealand. To date Elite has developed into a leading beauty school in New Zealand and Joyce Blok products continue to thrive as the number one professional skincare brand in New Zealand..
