Homecoming is a very important part of ASU traditions. As CTI students, we were assigned the task of designing a float to display in the Home Coming parade. For our project, we designed a float centered around the water tower. All students and teachers on the Polytechnic campus know about the water tower. It is of great importance because it provides water to the entire community. After designing the float, we encountered a couple of problems. We didn't know what to make the water tower tank from. If it were too heavy, the tower would collapse, but it couldn't be too light, otherwise it could easily fall from the uprights. We needed a tower that fit these two criteria and was easy to transport. To do this, we decided to use plastic foam boards as the tank material and wooden bars as supports. We cut the plastic foam panels into equal sizes and stacked them on top of each other to get the full shape of the tank. Using a saw, we cut portions of the foam panels at various angles to give it a rounded look. We spent most of our time polishing the water tank to make it look presentable. With the time remaining, we added gold paint to the design and red ribbons to the outside of the float to give it a visual pop. As a finishing touch, we attached small airplanes to the side of the water tower via cables. Our main problem in designing the float was finding a design that included the iconic water tower, was visually appealing, and was economical and simple to build. The tower itself had to fit within a specific height requirement – around 10 feet – and had to stand on its own without any human interaction to keep it stable. On top of that, we need to build large wooden letters to create a display on both sides of the wagon tied to CTI's slogan “make”. More importantly, we had to do it
