There are many different theorists with different ideas. I chose to focus on Erikson's theory of trust vs. Be wary. I absolutely agree with her ideas because I believe that the experiences a person might have as a child can have a huge impact on their life. I must say that I have chosen to give serious consideration to his beliefs as I am raising my daughter. Before starting nursing school I was an Early Head Start Home Visitor for prenatal families up to three years of age. With this experience I have been in many homes with different types of parents. I totally agree with the Trust vs. Trust theory. Erikson no confidence. Seeing this first hand with parents who didn't want to hold their baby because they were afraid of "ruining" them or just putting the bottle down so the baby wasn't so "dependent" absolutely blew me away. I couldn't imagine having a baby that you didn't hold. I always wanted to express my opinion, but I couldn't judge, so I printed the curriculum to do the following week on Erikson's theory. Many parents would ignore it because others would actually read it and be very interested. There was a difference in the way the children behaved as they grew up. It was very clear to me which parents provided the loving, nurturing environment that Erikson believed every child needed. I think if more parents were educated on the topic there would be many more loving and caring parents for children in the world. Some people simply don't know where to find or search for information. Many people believe that everything a child goes through in life doesn't matter because the child is so young and won't remember.
