As a future teacher, I need to be aware that my classroom will be full of diverse students. There will be students who need more attention, accommodations, and modifications in the classroom to achieve their academic goals through the collaboration of special education and general education teachers. There will be different students with different problems to overcome that require an expert teacher who can help students achieve particular individualized goals because, as we know, everyone is different. I want to be able to reach out and help each of my students, and by taking courses on learning the needs of exceptional students, such as Collaboration for Inclusive Schooling, I can learn how to work with and assist students with special needs and provide them with opportunities to learn. History and Models of Inclusion Many clinicians, educators, and advocates have helped pave the way for exceptional students, also known as learning disabled, to receive a free, appropriate education. At the beginning of the 19th century the first systematic attempts were made to assist and educate the “mad” or “idiots”. Due to a failure to understand the difference between those who are “insane” and those with disabilities, many have been locked up in mental institutions instead of receiving the correct services. With the idea of democracy and individual freedom, political, medical and educational authorities have supported learning disabled people by providing them with the skills needed to become independent and productive citizens. Doctors such as Philippe Pinel, Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard and Edouard Seguin, laid the foundation for today's understanding of exceptional students. Although, at the time, they were considered revolutionary ideas, ... middle of paper ... unity and responsibility to show them that they can do it. If an exceptional student has someone who believes in him, there is a greater chance that children will believe in themselves. Conclusion While there may be challenges when addressing the inclusion of students with special needs in general education classrooms, the benefits outweigh the challenges. By including these types of students in the classroom, we, the teacher, the exceptional student, other students, and parents, can all learn from each other by communicating and collaborating on what we need to do to be successful in and out of the classroom. It is important to consider and understand all aspects of a child with special needs because I, a future teacher, will have these kind of students in my classroom and want to do anything and everything it takes for them to achieve and succeed in life.
