Topic > Poor intensive farming contributes to the onset of E. Coli...

The meat and poultry industry represents the largest segment of U.S. agriculture. This contributes to the high number of meat production in the industry. Americans eat meat, eggs and often drink milk, but this is not good for our health. Intensive farming is the main issue that explains why the way food is processed is not good for human consumption. Animals on factory farms are trained to grow faster than the average animal so that the portions of food they produce are larger. These animals are sprayed and fed harmful pesticides and antibiotics. These harmful substances are then passed out of the animals' bodies for humans to consume. The way animals are processed is a big issue in the fast food industry. In fact, I am convinced that inadequate factory farming is contributing to E. Coli disease, environmental pollution and the inhumane treatment of animals. People constantly monitor what they eat for fear of getting sick. Intensive farming facilities are overcrowded, making animals prone to spreading diseases to human consumers. William C. Roberts, editor of the American Journal of Cardiology, once said, "When we kill animals for food, they end up killing us because their flesh, composed of harmful, chemical substances, was never intended for humans" ( Roberts 2 ). The food animals on factory farms are fed and the way they are treated have a negative impact on the health of humans. “Not only are dangerous influenza viruses mutating due to these concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), but we are also exposed to other very serious bacteria and pathogens” (Freston 2). Consumers who eat dairy, egg and meat products produced on factory farms may be susceptible to contracting food-borne bacteria such as... half of paper... problems and environmental pollution are just some of the reasons why because the factor it must be banned altogether. All these problems can be solved through public awareness and participation, pollution reduction programs for small farms and alternative agricultural practices. Although there are many ways to prevent the problems caused by factory farming, many people argue that factory farming is the only way to meet the growing demand for food in today's world, but factory farming is not necessary to meet those needs. Using alternative and better methods of factory farming will provide healthier food and better treatment for the animals, but companies don't want to risk having to raise prices and lose profits from the products they get from factory farming. They simply won't sacrifice the health of the land or the quality of the food simply to make a few extra dollars.
