I believe that mass media has a much more powerful effect on the public than we think. In the 21st century we are surrounded by non-stop advertising, media, electronics and connectivity, so we can hardly find a quiet moment. Television brings us news, entertainment, and advertising, all wrapped up in a cute, colorful, loud bow. Cell phones, especially smartphones, allow us to text, email, call, take photos, watch videos and read the latest news in the palm of our hand. Newspapers and magazines are now in color, distributed daily and have a section for every interest. We are surrounded by mass media to the point of suffocation. Tidying up the conglomerate is frustrating and tiring at times, but we seem to enjoy it as we keep coming back for more. Now, just because the media is everywhere doesn't mean it's all bad, nor does it mean it's all positive. There is quite a bit of personal work to be done when someone has to decide whether the content a piece of media provides is good or bad. Of course all this is objective since each person has individual tastes and values. Personally I think there is more negative media than positive right now. I say this because the media is often paid by advertising and therefore is loaded with commitments on the financial books. Magazines constantly publish articles about how to lose weight, why to buy a particular line of clothing, or how to improve your love life by spending money. These may not seem like negatives, and they don't actually always report negative information, but I feel like they are having a negative impact on society even though they are not inherently negative topics. The media is powerful, always has been, and can create a world of trust,... middle of paper......public demand would force the company to change and go back to the drawing board. Furthermore, this will also help companies reach their target markets, clearly display their values and beliefs, and avoid coming under attack when something outside of their values acts against what they believe. A perfect example of this would be the Duck Dynasty fiasco in 2013. A star of the show made an anti-gay statement that was not within the beliefs of A&E, the network. This required some control from the network and therefore left a bad taste in consumers' mouths. This proposal would constitute more of a call to self-motivated action than anything else. It would ask individuals and the media to clearly decipher what they believe, support and wish to show. I believe this would help create a more positive environment in the media world.
