"What happened ten years ago?" Jonas asked. The main character of Lois Lowry's novel, The Giver, is Jonas, who lives in a dystopian society. The problem he poses is that he realizes that the community hides many secrets, such as what the release really is. Throughout the story Jonas has become aware of what his community is doing to his life. Jonas inherited many traits of different types, learning many life lessons and enduring horrible secrets from the community. He clearly shows that he is proud of what he is accomplishing, such as becoming a catcher, sympathetic to the cruel tactics of releasing the innocent or the guilty, and curious about how his life will change after he is introduced to his work in society. .In this astonishing novel, Jonas displays many qualities, one of which is curiosity. Jonas is just getting his work in his community as a Giver, but for now he remains as a Receiver. As stated in the book of Jonas, the new Giver/Receiver in the making, “Giver, how did it happen to you when you were becoming The Receiver?” ( ) This shows that Jonas is very curious to know more about the Giver. Plus, since he's a catcher in the making, he wants to know if it's worth training for. As quoted in Jonas' book, "Do You Love Me?" (127) Jonas is demonstrating that he does not know what love truly is before he is given the memory by the Giver. This event also shows that he doesn't know much about his community's pastimes. Although Jonas was curious, he also had very thin skin. After Jonas stopped taking the pills for agitation, he felt a mixture of different emotions, one of which was sympathy. Since Jonas had asked to see the release tape, a thing... middle of paper... an accomplishment to bear and be proud of. To conclude, Jonas is experiencing a handful of traits and emotions on his journey from age eleven to age twelve. This astonishing novel shows a perfect example of a dystopian society, with the community starting as a "perfect" neighborhood and ending up being the complete opposite. Jonas has shown his inner self throughout the story with the help of the Giver, and these magnificent traits are curiosity, knowledge, and improving his inner strength. Besides being proud of himself when he had just been given the splendid task of being the Giver of the community, he escapes with Gabriel on a treacherous journey to the next community. Finally, sympathy hindered Jonas at every precise moment of the day. Thus, Jonas overcame many obstacles and finally managed to realize his goals.
