As capitalism runs its course and develops new technologies, society is left to pick up the pieces and figure out where these new technologies will take them. Since I learned to use the Internet as a child, I have become accustomed to seeing increasingly fascinating technological developments that have changed the way I communicate as the years have passed. Now that the Internet has infiltrated more and more aspects of human life, it has become necessary to reflect on how this critical juncture will continue to impact our society. In Digital Disconnect, Robert McChesney provides an analysis of the arguments used by celebrants and skeptics to express their opinions on the Internet. McChesney then goes beyond these arguments to explain how PEC plays a key role in determining the direction the Internet is heading. These problems include massive commercialization, media consolidation, and the lack of a public sphere. With an entity as vast as the Internet, it is not surprising that a number of unanswered questions arise. I am sure that the Internet will continue to confound scholars as it continues to evolve rapidly. By analyzing the opinions of celebrants and skeptics, I was able to understand the potential of the Internet. Using PEC I was able to understand how democracy and capitalism relate to Internet issues. In the future, I hope that society can develop further understanding of the Internet and move towards the Internet as the celebrants had hoped..
