Technology has evolved in various ways over time. As many of us know, medicine is an important part of our lives because chemistry has advanced, along with various other things we need. Another thing that chemistry has improved are batteries or fuel cells, like those found in a TV remote or in a car. Chemistry has also helped improve gasoline for automobiles and other everyday goods. This includes gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene and diesel. A hydrogen fuel cell is what converts the chemical energy stored by hydrogen fuel into electricity. Hydrogen fuel is very similar to regular batteries like those we would find in a car or a watch, but there are differences between the two. Like a battery, fuel cells that use hydrogen and oxygen are used to power devices that use electricity. While both batteries and fuel cells convert chemical energy into electrical energy, batteries store chemical energy within the battery. This might be effective if you intend to recharge a battery, but the creators of fuel cells had other plans for more efficient ways of providing electricity; obviously using fuel cells. The big difference between fuel cells and batteries is that they do not require charging. Instead of storing energy inside, a hydrogen fuel cell uses a supply of chemical energy from outside! This is stored in the hydrogen supplied to the anode. Fuel cells consume hydrogen and oxygen, and when fed continuously (the waste product is water, which of course is removed), electricity is successfully generated! Before hydrogen fuel cells were discovered, or before they were put into use, everyone was forced to store energy in a regular battery and keep recharging it to get electricity. It is non-toxic and renewable, making it a huge resource. Biodiesel comes from plants and animals, so it is easy to renew it from agriculture and recycling. Biodiesel can be used directly through a normal diesel engine. It is most efficient when mixed with diesel in a certain percentage. It is expressed as Bxx where xx is biodiesel. The most common blend is B20. If the blend was B100 it would mean that 100% of the biodiesel would be used. Chemistry has had a huge impact on society, from medicines to fuels and batteries. Everything that scientists, chemists, and other researchers have discovered through chemistry is fundamental to today and to the way society is run. Fuel cells and all other fuels such as gasoline and diesel have had a very positive impact on the world.
