In our research methods course for Florida International University, we conducted a study for the fall semester. We selected one hundred and twenty students from our university to participate. Of the 120 students, 52% (n=62) were men and 45% (n=54) women, in addition to those who did not report their age (n=4). The ages analyzed ranged from a minimum of 17 to a maximum of 59 years with an average of 24.98 years (SD=7.74). Get an Original Essay All potential participants are asked if they are willing to participate in a study for an FIU research methods course. They are expressed that there is no risk to participate and if they are willing to contribute to a survey that involves a neutral post on Facebook. After approving the verbal assistance, one questionnaire out of three was administered to the students. Of the three questionnaires there were three different conditions. The first condition is sexuality, the second is romantic and finally we have an educational condition. We started by asking students to make sure they read the Facebook page very carefully and thoroughly as they will need to use their memory to answer some questions. The Facebook page used belonged to Riley Washington, there was no gender or age given on the person behind the page. Riley's photo was an unbiased image of the sunset, but the important thing was the "About" section. Riley Talks About Me describes how they just moved to the area but don't know anyone yet and are hoping they can meet a new friend. Throughout the page they describe themselves as fun and the center of attention, as well as open-minded and relaxed. The same page was used for the three questionnaires. What changed were the advertisements we placed at the bottom of the page. This is where conditions come into play. Each page contained sexual ads, romance ads, or educational ads at the bottom of the About Me section. All ads in the three questionnaires are the same size so as not to change the conditions of each page. For the first questionnaire, the three ads were all sexually expressive. The adverts included are such: An Ax advert featuring a shirtless man with body spray next to him. It incorporated a slogan that read "Click here for your ax moment." The next ad promoted a woman drinking with a man while wearing a more sexual outfit. The latest advertisement was for a perfume with a shirtless man hugging the woman. These ads were not a part of Riley's Facebook page. We used the "Ad Choice" icon to validate ads. For the following priming condition we used romance. Again, while using the same page for Riley's about me, we changed the ads. The first ad included featured both a man and a woman enjoying a nice romantic dinner at Sandal's Resort. The second ad marketing the perfume showed a couple riding a horse in a field. The last ad was a couple promoting E-Harmony, the online dating site. With the last questionnaire we used the same one on me, but now we have changed the ads to make them more educational.
