In Little Bee and Incendiary by Chris Cleave, the characters Little Bee and the unnamed narrator, respectively, undergo a traumatic experience early in the books. Little Bee is placed in an immigration detention center upon arriving in England because she has no legal documents to prove her age. Meanwhile, the unnamed narrator's life is turned upside down by a terrorist attack that kills her husband and four-year-old son. Both characters lose hope and faith in their world and adjust to their new lives accordingly. Little Bee disguises herself physically, verbally and legally to stay safe from the dangers of her new life. The narrator combats her emotional breakdown by helping to investigate the instigator of the terrorist attack. While the challenges they face may not be similar in nature, both women undergo the same sequence of events that begin with trauma, followed by the complete depletion of their self-esteem, and finally a rebirth through the help of others around them. Although their environments are different, they undergo similar changes in their outlook and behavior towards difficulties. In Little Bee and Incendiary, both characters undergo traumatic experiences that lead them to lose their self-confidence and hope for a better world. Furthermore, these two characters find themselves in extremely different situations, but their lives are exacerbated by the experiences they go through. Little Bee, a sixteen-year-old Nigerian girl who travels to England to escape the conditions in her country, finds herself locked up in an immigration detention center because she has no legal documents proving her age. Furthermore, during her confinement, Little Bee struggles to protect herself from the people in... middle of paper... at this point all the hope she has been trying to build up since the bombing is completely exhausted. He discovers the corruption plaguing the city he was doing his best and his time to protect. Furthermore, this is where character development takes place and is clear to the reader. Instead of letting her emotions get her down like before, the narrator forces herself to focus on the positive aspects of the situation and remain optimistic. Overall, both Little Bee and the narrator are victims of distressing and traumatic experiences that send their lives into darkness. However, both find a branch of hope to hold on to before hitting rock bottom; with the help of the people around them. Ultimately, both characters undergo immense changes as they develop courage and emotional strength to overcome the barriers that stand between them and a better life...
