Loe and Moore describe the environments of the Green House as follows: Unlike a traditional nursing home with a hospital-like atmosphere, Green Houses are described as “deinstitutionalized care facilities. They . . . home with 12 or fewer residents. They feature private rooms and full bathrooms, ensuring seniors' privacy and personality (seniors decorate their own rooms). Each home features family-style shared common spaces, including a fire pit, dining area, and full kitchen. (2012). The sense of privacy is an important characteristic of a home-like environment. As Cristofetti, Gennai and Rodeschini describe it, “The house has always represented and symbolized the passage from the external to the internal world, from the public to the private sphere” (2011). The furniture with which a person fills their home makes it their home, since their personality and choices are intertwined with the space (Cristofetti, Gennai and Rodeschini, 2011).
