Topic > Military service should continue to be voluntary...

Since America's first war began, there have been countless discussions about who should fight for our country. We talk about age, gender and whether the service should be voluntary or not. In America, service is voluntary, although in other countries it is not. Service should remain voluntary in America because otherwise it would go against freedom and be the source of new problems in our country. Furthermore, if young people dedicated two years of their lives to service, they would not gain experience to work in fields that require more manpower. In America, we live by the idea of freedom. When you think of freedom, America comes to mind. The stars and stripes. The Declaration of Independence. The fathers found. We have created the ultimate “land of the free”—our national anthem even embodies the idea. Freedom means having your own voice and being able to do what makes you happy. Forcing young men and women to sacrifice two years of their lives to serve in our armed forces is not even close to the idea of a free country. We have the right to choose what field we want to work in, and we should have the freedom to do so. Forcing someone to do anything will, if not initially, eventually cause feelings of hatred, for lack of better words. Furthermore, trying to control someone will almost always lead to rebellions. If we take our history books, world or American, we see examples everywhere. Women who rebelled in the 1920s against conservative ways, slaves who freed themselves, the Philippines who rebelled against the Spanish, the list goes on and on with protests, riots, etc. Forcing our young people to serve will only lead to citizens going out of their way to avoid it. Many families with young children... middle of paper... scarred and perhaps even physically. It may not be possible to try to pick up exactly where you left off. Consider a guy who wants to be a firefighter but has served two years early. Imagine that during the fight he loses his legs. His dream of becoming a firefighter will never come true, not by choice, because he was forced to put himself in danger. The way conscription is described is that it requires every young person, man or woman, to serve in the military for two years. . In this description, "requires" is just a euphemism for "force". A requirement simply means that it is not optional, which is exactly what enforcement includes. Asking a young person to change their life is immoral and should not be included in our society. Even if our country did not have freedom as its foundation, conscription would still remain an inequity.
