Susto, fear or loss of the soul is a popular disease composed mainly of symptoms of depression, weakness and loss of appetite. It is mainly reflected in Latin American cultures, but especially in Indian communities, especially Mexican. While other cultures may suffer from similar symptoms, they may not be related to susto. This reading focuses on modern descriptions of the affected cultures and the symptoms they present. Furthermore, it describes the methods used to reverse the effects of susto on the individual. This investigation focuses mainly on interviewing individuals originating from Latin America, who have knowledge of susto or suffer from it; and the methods used by the curandero (a) to help the “patient”. The following research paper will answer some questions regarding the causes, symptoms, and syndrome of susto, fear, or soul loss. Susto, is "loss of the soul through magical fear" and is a Hispanic condition also identified as pasmo, espanto and perdida de la sombra. . There are some similar conditions recognized around the world, leading to the belief that these conditions may not only occur in the Latin American community; but so far susto is only familiar to Hispanics. The main population that experiences susto is Latin American, mainly Mexican and its Indian communities. Susto is not recognized as a disease by the US Department of Medical Health, but it is by culture. Women are at greater risk of suffering from susto than men, due to the strong pressure resulting from cultural responsibilities. Latin Americans described experiencing susto after traumatic or stressful situations that forced the espiritu (spirit) to leave the body. Individuals suffer from lack of sleep, weakness, loss of appetite, vomiting, fever and diarrhea may also occur. It is very important to appreciate the diverse amount of popular diseases in emerging cultures in the United States, as this will give us a better understanding of ways to compare and treat cultural diseases. People who suffered from Susto in the past experienced depression and stress disorders simultaneously, compared to those who reported no cases of the popular disease. Research on popular diseases is necessary to better understand their symptoms and treat them effectively. We can no longer separate the mind from the body.
