Is foster care really what we think it is? What is custody? Foster care is a unit/group home where minors are placed. They are entrusted to the hands of a so-called "caregiver" or "adoptive parent". The placement of this minor is generally organized by the form of government. Simply put, foster care is a service that helps homeless children find a home with loving and suitable parents for that child. According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, “foster care is a temporary placement for abused, neglected, and dependent children who need a safe place to live when their parents or another relative cannot take take care of them." Being in foster care should be a halfway point for children waiting to be adopted into a safe, permanent home. Subsequently, the children are transferred to a home where an adult, over the age of 21, takes care of them until family problems are resolved or the child is adopted. (“Foster Care”) For the vast majority of the population, foster care is something that none of us ever have to undergo. Most people don't even know what kind of impact it can have on a child's well-being. The fact of the matter is that we are blinded by the picture society paints us. We think that foster families have the child's best interest at heart, but this is far from the truth. Foster care is supposed to be temporary, as previously stated, children in foster care can get stuck in the system, they are stuck in a cycle where flaws in the system can affect the children's lives. Many children may suffer long-term effects, emotionally and physically, from being in foster homes where treatment from caregivers or the environment was poorly distributed. Many children... in the middle of the paper... of the system. The Bible says: "You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted, encourage them and hear their cry, defending the orphans and the oppressed, so that mere mortals will never inspire terror again."
