Women seemed to be more emotionally involved in a conversation than men. Men protected themselves from being mistreated or dominated by women. Tannen talked about participatory listening in which women were able to complete a speaker's sentence. Men interpreted this practice as an interruption, a lack of attention, and an intrusion. Tannen explained, “Men take women's ritual 'problem talk' too literally, just as women mistake men's ritual challenges for an actual attack” (Tannen 409).
