Topic > Tay Sachs Disease - 1038

Imagine there is a disease that is terrible and causes you problems every day, there is no cure, it just drags on day after day. This is Tay Sachs disease, it is a lifelong disease, unless it kills you early in life. This disease has many symptoms. These symptoms are the result of the way the disease affects the brain and its functionality. This disease is an inherited disease and is known as a serious genetic disease ("Health and Wellness Resource Center and Alternative Health Module"). This disease is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by a defect in the HEXA gene that provides instructions for making part of an enzyme called beta hexosaminidase A, which is critical in the brain and spinal cord. ("Health and Wellbeing Resource Center and Alternative Health Module"). This enzyme helps break down GM2 or ganglioside, which without the enzyme to break it down builds up to toxic levels in the brain causing serious and life-threatening complications. (“Student Resources in Context Tay-Sachs” World of Health.Gale, 2007.Student Resources in Context.Web.May 22, 2014”). Three types of this disease are infantile and juvenile Tay Sachs, chronic Tay Sachs and LOTS which is similar to chronic disease but occurs later in life. (“Student Resources in Context Tay-Sachs” World of Health.Gale,2007.Student Resources in context.Web.May 22, 2014”). Infant and Juvenile causes death while Chronic and LOT causes a life full of muscle weakness and difficulty carrying out daily activities. ("Health and Wellness Resource Center and Alternative Health Module"). Tay Sachs can be detected before the parents have children by both having a blood test or if they have CVS, or chorionic villi... middle of the card... inhibit it or make it benefit the person who has it. Almost like genetic engineering in a way. Those who live suffer a fate worse than death, suffering in the life they live. All in all, Tay Sachs disease is a lifelong terror that lurks in the shadows and strikes when we least expect it. By studying and analyzing the causes, symptoms, forms and prognosis, it is possible for scientists to develop a form of treatment to allow those affected to live longer. It could also open doors to preventing the disease or even alleviating its symptoms in those who already have it. All in all, Tay Sachs disease is a horrible and difficult disease to live with, but with all the advances in genetic technology and engineering, it may be possible to synthesize an effective cure or remedy to reduce the symptoms of those affected who can make their life more bearable.
