Topic > What are banned books? Fahrenheit 451 - 925

Many books have been questioned and contested. Even to the point of banning them. But what exactly is a banned book and why are they banned? A banned book is a book that has been censored by an authority, government body, library, or even a school system. A book that has been banned is effectively removed from a library or school system. The real contextual reasons for banning them are the use of graphic violence, blood, sexuality, explicit language, religion or dark times in history. From a non-contextual perspective, the reason books are banned is usually because they have the best intentions to protect people, often children, from difficult philosophies and information. Teachers, or even most ordinary adults, often censor children's books if they believe the books contain maniacal or controversial ideas. In some scenarios, those who censor books think that a book might be appropriate for one or more groups in society. A book that might be great for a ninth grader could easily be horrendous or confusing for a fourth grader. Having thus exposed and influenced them to think a certain way and act based on what they have just read. Well, at least that's what people think will happen anyway. But honestly, reading books of any genre gives us knowledge, enjoyment and imagination, so no book or novel should be banned and it ultimately depends on the reader's choice. The novel's protagonist is Guy Montag, a "fireman" in an unspecified futuristic society. where he and the other fireman start fires, instead of putting them out. Which brings with it situational irony because in our modern world firefighters are supposed to put out fires and not start them. Books are banned and burned after being discovered… in the middle of paper… a huge amount of persuasion to turn someone away from their faith. Once again it helps make a great book because it makes it stand out like a sore thumb and people usually don't like controversy. Furthermore, Fahrenheit 451 featured explicit words and content that were absolutely unsuitable for young readers. They have banned it in many schools and governments in other countries have also banned them. It is not as helpful as they think a book should be because it contains offensive words. Parents also filed complaints which also led to Bradbury's work being banned. Some people think that swear words corrupt the minds of those who might read them. Which is understandable, but the swearing in this book represents the people in our world as well as anger. A single individual cannot express fiery fury through the uncursed words Montag used to demonstrate his wickedness.
